JVH Digital Print Contest '10

We had a great time at our show and we hope that all in attendence got some great information out of it,
or at least got fired up.  Some cool prizes were issued to the top nine contenders, and the photos/fine

The attached image is called "Banned in Gig Harbor" because the Gig Harbor City Council required the
Peninsula Art League to delete the image from their juried show at the gallery located in the Gig Harbor City Hall
It is now showing at an alternate gallery in Gig Harbor.

It was photographed in my studio with a Canon EOS 5D and printed with little manipulation on my Epson
Stylus Pro 4800 purchased from JVH several years ago.   No special finishing techniques.

This is an image that is impossible to capture in one shot.  If you expose for the rock formation the sky goes
almost white and the foreground foliage is in deep shadow.  This is my first HDR attempt combining 3 rather
ho-hum images exposed for different areas of the scene.

"Double Helix" is part of a series I call "And God Created Evolution" in which I explore the cultural,
historic, and scientific elements related to evolution.  I searched for a year to find a
suitable metaphor for the DNA double helix until I saw this opened bean pod.

General Info:
This photograph was taken in Ethiopia, in the village of Korah.  The woman’s name is Sawaleme.  She has 3 children
and after her neighbor also passed away a few months ago because of HIV, Sawaleme now takes care of her
2 children.  She makes a living by spending time finding food and things she can sell at the nearby garbage dump.
She has Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity tattoos on her chin and neck.

The lighting is natural light coming in through her doorway, no flash was used.
The photo was lightly edited in Photoshop.

I captured this image while walking along the Main river during a visit to Frankfurt am Main in 2008.
